Alternative Air Fresheners That Will Keep Your Indoor Air Quality Intact

By

We all have it. Tucked nicely in your over-the-toilet cabinet, or on the shelf beside your throne—that can of air freshener stands proudly, waiting to save you from the embarrassment that comes along with lingering smells. But, what if we told you that your coveted bottle of good smells is actually jeopardizing your indoor air quality? Well, we are sorry to say—it is.

Aerosol air fresheners carry volatile organic compounds, which adversely affect those who are exposed. Health implications ranging from respiratory issues to cancer can result from repeated use of products that include VOC’s. However, you should not have to decide between having good indoor air quality and maintaining a fresh home. That’s why, we here at Air Conditioning Specialist, are providing alternative home-freshening methods that won’t compromise your indoor air quality. These items can, and should, take the place of your current aerosol air freshener:

Essential Oils

For those with allergies or those sensitive to scents, this air freshener is a great alternative to the traditional aerosol cans! You can purchase an electronic diffuser to distribute the essential oil vapor throughout your space, or you can use essential oil sticks to absorb your preferred scent. The automatic diffuser will provide instant aroma; whereas, essential oil sticks take time to absorb the oil and affect your air.

If you’re looking for more of a masking solution, rather than an air freshener, essential oils can also fit this need. And, this alternative is super easy to DIY! To make an essential oil spray, place a cup of water, a dash of baking soda, and three to five droplets of your favorite essential oil in a spray bottle. You can use this solution on your carpets and furniture to keep them smelling fresh!

Fragrant Flowers

Pungent flowers are nature’s remedy to lingering odors. And, they will add a little extra color to your space. Scented geraniums and roses are the ideal candidates for covering up unwanted odors. Add a bouquet of either to your living space, restroom, or bedroom to achieve a fresh-smelling environment. This alternative is all-natural; however, if you have allergies—not ideal.

Paraben-Free Candles

Scented candles will not only create a relaxed ambiance in your space —they can permeate preferable smells throughout it. Make sure you are purchasing paraben-free candles to prevent releasing additional volatile organic compounds into your home. When using candles as your alternative freshening method, remember to blow-out any lit candles before going to bed for the night or leaving your home.

Stove-Top Potpourri

You may be inquiring about what stove-top potpourri is in the first place, and we are here to tell you—it is the hidden gem of home freshening alternatives.

First, pick out your favorite fragrances—from lemon and rosemary to cinnamon and cranberries—and place them in a pot of water. Bring your mixture to a boil and then reduce the heat to a simmer. When the potpourri mix reaches a simmer, your home will begin to fill with your selected aroma. Just remember, never leave your stove unattended!
