Let us set the scene—you have found your dream home, and you simply cannot wait to put your offer in, sign on the dotted line and make it your home. You rush through the process because you’re nervous that if you show even the slightest gestation, someone will snatch that house right out of your hands. However, in your rush, you failed to notice that the house is actually infested with termites which are in the process of eating through the structure of your home.
That sounds like our worst nightmare, and while most homeowners won’t find termites in their homes when they skip an inspection, they could be left with some other disasters instead.
Get Your Future House Inspected
Before even signing the final paperwork on your dream house, make sure to do the following:
- Check all major appliances—replacing major appliances like the washer and dryer, dishwasher, refrigerator, etc., will add up very quickly.
- Check the roof—the last thing you want is the roof caving in after the first rainstorm as a new homeowner. Replacing the roof is one of the largest expenses you’ll face as a homeowner, so if you can get it covered by someone else, do it.
- Check the foundation—similar to the roof, you don’t want to move into your new home only to find that its fundamental structure is unstable.
If you do notice anything throughout this inspection, bring it up to the house’s seller. A lot of the time, the replacement costs can be negotiated into the price of the home, or the current owner will offer to take care of it for you, which will save you a lot of time and energy on upgrades down the road.
