Best Tips for Spring Cleaning

By

Spring is the season of rebirth and new beginnings. It’s the perfect opportunity for you to look at your home and your life and figure out what’s working for you and what needs to change or be adjusted. A part of this process is spring cleaning. The typical idea of spring cleaning is wiping down the counters and vacuuming the floors, but for a more comprehensive experience, you’ll want to consider more of your home.

If one of your goals for the new year was making sure to keep your home well maintained, then take a look at our best tips for spring cleaning. We’ve made a list of our top spring cleaning priorities; maybe you’ll find a few similarities or even some inspiration for your own home.

Keep the Air Clean

Maintaining your home’s indoor air quality is incredibly important for your comfort at home and also your health. There are a variety of ways that you can make sure that your air quality is staying at optimal cleanliness, here are our favorite methods:

Air Filters

Your air filters should be replaced at least every 90 days; however, there are a few factors that will require you to change them more frequently. For instance, if you have pets at home, young children, anyone with allergies or respiratory illnesses, or anyone who smokes, we recommend changing your air filters every 30 to 60 days instead.

This will allow your filters to trap more dirt, dust, allergens, debris, and bacteria before they can circulate throughout your home.

Duct Cleaning

Since your air ducts are responsible for moving air throughout your house, it’s important that they remain clean. Unfortunately, air ducts are also the perfect place for accumulating dirt and dust. Make sure to schedule semi-annual duct cleanings so that you can keep debris from circulating throughout your home.

Clean the Carpets

Another place that loves to trap dirt and dust are your carpets. Think of your carpets and dirt like pieces of velcro coming together. Every time you step foot inside your home, that dirt is transferring from your shoes and into your carpet. It’s then transferred throughout your home every time someone else steps in that dirt or sets a bag on it and then moves that bag. Ideally, vacuuming your carpets should be a part of your weekly routine to minimize the amount of dirt circulating through your home and air.

Clean Your HVAC Unit

Did you know that you should be cleaning your HVAC unit? It’s okay if you didn’t; most people forget about this step. We recommend cleaning your HVAC unit about twice a year, more frequently if your unit appears dirty in between those cleanings.

How do you keep it clean, you might ask? Keep a clear radius of space around the external unit, remove tree branches, shrubs, leaves, dirt, etc. This will prevent loose debris from blocking the unit and dirtying or damaging the condenser and evaporator coils. The dirtier these pieces are, the harder they have to work to keep your home hot or cool, making your system far less efficient.
