Rotate Your Closet
The change in seasons is a perfect time to clear out all of the old clothes you never seem to wear anymore. This is such a great habit of getting into; not only can you donate those old clothes to people in need, but you’re making room for new pieces of clothing that you’ll love in the future!
On top of doing a good deed and clearing out the clutter, rotating your wardrobe between spring/summer clothes and fall/winter clothes is a great way to make sure you actually get to wear all of the items in your closet. It’s really easy to forget about certain clothing items if they get buried at the bottom of a drawer or in the back of the closet, so intentionally rotating everything makes sure those lesser worn pieces have their own time to shine. And who wants to wear a sundress in the middle of winter? Move that dress to the back and coats to the front.
Seal Your Doors and Windows
The spaces around your door frames and window frames are major culprits in heat and energy loss during the fall and winter seasons. According to the US Department of Energy, your doors and windows could be responsible for nearly 30 percent of your overall heating costs. There are a few ways to solve this problem; here they are:
- Use caulking to fill in the gaps around window and door frames. However, be careful not to accidentally seal a window shut, which can cause some messy problems.
- Apply a film to your windows to prevent heat loss through the glass itself. That’s right; older windows can actually lose your home’s heat through the glass itself. While new windows are far more efficient, they are expensive, so apply a film instead if you’re looking for a cost-effective option.
- Install weather stripping around your doors, particularly on the underside that glides against the floor. The door must be able to open and close with ease, but you don’t want too much air seeping in and out under your door.
Schedule Fall Maintenance
Once you’ve prepared the rest of your home for fall, it’s time to prepare your heating system for the cold temperatures. It’s been about six months since you’ve turned your system to “heat,” so it makes sense that before you ask it to work 100%, you should get it checked out. During a tune-up session, we’ll inspect the unit, make sure there are no obvious problems, replace the air filters, inspect the thermostat and make sure the unit works as it should. If we notice that anything is damaged or not functioning properly, we’ll recommend repairs or possibly a replacement.
This allows us to resolve all of these problems before your heating system becomes crucial to your comfort at home.
