How to Conquer Allergy Season

By

For many people, the spring season provides an opportunity to get outside, to start a garden, or just keep the windows open during the day. However, for those who suffer from allergies, the spring months mean an increased risk of runny noses, itchy eyes, and constant sneezing. Fortunately, there are simple steps that you can take to keep allergens to a minimum inside of your home.

Schedule a Duct Cleaning

Dust, pollen, and other allergens can build up in the ducts that carry air throughout your house. Each time that your heating or cooling system starts running, these particles are given a free ride to destinations such as your bedroom, living room, and laundry room. An annual duct cleaning can significantly reduce the quantity of airborne irritants that you’ll encounter while inside your own home. An annual duct cleaning may also improve your heating and cooling system’s efficiency, which can help keep your energy costs to a minimum.

Install an Air Purifier

An air purifier works by sucking the air out of a given space, collecting allergens in a filter, and pushing clean air back into that space. Depending on their size, these devices can be used to remove pollutants in a single room, a single floor, or throughout an entire home. In some cases, they can prevent smoke, dust, or outdoor pollutants from entering your house.

Have Air Filters Replaced

As a general rule, it’s a good idea to have air filters replaced at least once a year. In some cases, it will be necessary to replace them once every 90 days. This is because there is a limit to how much material a filter can collect before it becomes ineffective. If a filter becomes clogged, it can repel airborne irritants back into the air that you breathe. In some cases, those irritants can land on motors, fans, or other parts, which can force them to work harder than they need to.
